Where did the month go?

Yup. Almost 1/12 of the year 2007 is complete.

Remember when 2007 sounded far, far away?

Golly, I'm old.

Moving on...

Did you see last night's episode of Veronica Mars? (If you didn't I am somewhat disappointed, but I hope to convert all of you eventually. Muahahaha!)

I hope that the following list isn't too spoilerish, but if you had watched the show, as I had subtly hinted for you to do, you would know what I'm referring to. (I like commas. And long sentences.)

5 Lessons learned from Veronica Mars, 1/30/07 episode
  1. Geek love may be one of the purest forms of love there is, but even geek love cannot overlook a connection to the sex industry.
  2. You honestly can order anything you want from the internet. I mean anything.
  3. The best time to have 'serious' questions with your significant other about their sexual history is moments after having sex with him or her.
  4. Luck and lingerie are all one needs to find and keep the perfect relationship. According to strippers and hookers and stripper-hookers.
  5. Previews aren't always what they appear. I'm a little miffed about the fact that I have to wait an entire week to find out about the pregnancy bomb. Quite miffed, as a matter of fact.

<hint> watch veronica mars <hint>

Why should you watch Veronica Mars? For great dialogue/quotes such as these (all from the current season):

Veronica: [voiceover] Who knew that when opportunity knocked, it would look like a horny surfer?

Veronica: In my world, the wicked don't get parting gifts.

[Veronica questions none-too-bright classmate Hallie Piatt as she sunbathes.]

Veronica: Side question: what do you know about Patrice Petrelli?

Hallie: God! What's with all the questions? What's next — do you wanna know where I buried Jimmy Hoffman? [sic]

Veronica: Dustin's brother?

Mac: Are you freaking kidding me? The Pi Sig mega apocalypse? Hump the furniture, party back to the stone age, fifty keg bacchanalia?

Veronica: Sounds like fun, right?

Mac: Will they let me in? I think all the glitter has come off my porn star tube top.

As Miss America, I would help advocate world peace

In between lapses of consciousness last night, I started to think about what sort of talent I would (have) showcase(d) as a contestant on the Miss America Pageant. While thinking about my long list of talents, I unhappily texted MoSus & T about the fact that I am no longer a viable candidate for the title of Miss America.(As I am well past the age of 24, I am no longer eligible to compete. Yet another reason to be bitter at the whole 'aging' process. At least I'm closer to receiving AARP information in the mail. That's kind of a consolation prize. I guess.)

Those who know me and my sarcastic (or as I'd like to consider it 'dry') humor realize that I have spent approximately 2/3 of my life mocking all things beauty and all things pageant, after rewatching Miss Congeniality, I have realized the error of my ways. If a feminist icon like Sandra Bullock can overcome adversity such as bushy eyebrows and a lack of donuts, all strong women have a fair chance at becoming a beauty queen at some point in their lives. All it takes is the following ingredients: Lack of self-confidence, 1 gay mentor/beauty coach, 2 jars of Vaseline, 1 roll of double-sided tape, and 1 semi-embarassing talent.

Thus my entire reason for needing to list my talents, just in case the Miss America Pageant becomes desperate for contestants. (I mean in the wake of the entire "Is she drunk or not?" Miss USA debacle, they need some contestants with the ability to stay sober for at least 10 months. I could do that if the money was right.) So, my readers (I think there may be around 15 of you now), is a list of talents that I wouldn't need a row of coke to complete on national television:
  1. Recite a passage, Mary Catherine Gallagher-style, from Heathers. Unedited, of course. It adds more of a dramatic flair.
  2. Create an Excel spreadsheet. It would be both useful and informative.
  3. Translate a passage written in Pig Latin into English.
  4. Spin on a stool for one-minute without falling over.
  5. List all of the Nirvana albums in chronological order. Or in order of personal preference. Or in order of album sales. Or in order of color.
  6. Emcee a roast on Comedy Central. As they tend to pick out people that are either unknown or really lame. I can be either one of those. I promise.
  7. Clean a ferret cage in less than 5 minutes.
  8. List reasons why I should be crowned Miss America.
  9. Bend my shoulders in a way that tends to gross out others.
  10. Debate myself on the pros and cons of Boulevard Beer.

 5 Weekend Accomplishments
  1. Read three books. (I highly reccomend The History of Love - it's written by the wife of the author of Everthing is Illuminated.)
  2. Conversed with mi familia on the telephone. (Hope my sister is feeling better.)
  3. Avoided watching almost everything dealing with the SAG Awards. (I did not watch the red carpet pre-show stuff or the 2nd hour of the show. I'm so proud. I am thrilled that Little Miss Sunshine and The Office won, though.)
  4. Watched the second half of Jane Eyre on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre. (I am now cultural. And stuff.)
  5. Threw away my VHS tape collection. (Yup. They are no longer in the apartment. And I feel great about this fact.)

The stars vs Me

Today's horoscope de Me, courtesy of The Advocate:

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23): It won't do you any good to try to pawn off tasks or assignments for which you are responsible - all you'll get is rejection. Just get the jobs done as early as you can.

Yup. The stars are finally feeding into my hatred of all things delegation. Along with my other lovely personality traits such as distrust and selfishness. (And we wonder why I'm still single? Really, does anyone wonder?)

Beyond my horoscope condemning me to a day of 'work' (worst 4-letter word in the dictionary according to Me), it has been a very dull week overall. Which I'm completely cool with, but still...not the most fun to report to people outside of my own little world of dullness. I have, however, determined at least one highlight for each day of this week to share with all 10 of you, so enjoy:

Highlights of the past week according to Me
Monday - New episode of Studio 60, during which I texted S obnoxiously. Just call me "Danny-in-training."

Tuesday - New episode of Veronica Mars, which I watched instead of the State of the Union. Does that mean that I am an enemy of FOX News? Back to VM - I once again texted S a lot. I enjoyed the fact that Piz was crushed by the return of the LoVe, but alas the reign of LoVe will not be long due to the age old relationship killer of hookers. Really, why are hookers even allowed on TV? All they do is break people up or give credibility to Law & Order: SVU.

Wednesday - Cane's. So unhealthy for Me, yet so delightful.

Thursday - Sushi with T. We about ate our weight in rainbow and crunchy rolls.

Looking back, the past few days haven't really been that dull, they've just been overcast with a 65% chance of rain. What else should I expect from winter in Baton Rouge? At least it's not freezing rain. I guess?

Cuz it's been a long day...

and there's finally a new episode of Veronica Mars tonight, here are a few fun quotes to get you in the mood to tune in:

Veronica: And you call yourselves college men. Where are the posters with beer and half-naked ladies?

Wallace: Oh, it's behind the case of porn and my shot glass collection.

Veronica: Doesn't look like they jimmied their way in.

Piz: It wasn't locked.

Veronica: College campus, all your worldly possessions. Where are you from, Brigadoon?

Piz: Portland! Or, well, just outside of Portland. It's a nice little suburb called Beaverton. Real salt of the earth people - you know, mini-van in every driveway, chicken in every pot.

Veronica: Where they never ask rhetorical questions?

Veronica: Women. Bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch.

Mac: Why can't they just look pretty and get their MRS degrees?

And my personal favorite: Veronica: I'm a freshman. I only recently figured out where Waldo was.

(All quotes are from Season 3 - the current season.)

Just another manic Monday

I had an enjoyable weekend. I didn't do much. Thus the enjoyment factor.

5 Things I did over the weekend
  1. Minor apartment maintenance - laundry, cooking, ferret tending...the usual mundane activities of an 'adult's' life.
  2. Watched the Studio 60-a-thon on Bravo yesterday. Can I just say how much I enjoy that show? Great writing, acting...just a great show. YOU SHOULD WATCH IT TONIGHT!
  3. Caught up on my PBS watching for the year - Nature and Masterpiece Theatre. I feel very hoity toity now. And kinda British.
  4. Avoided watching the NFL football games. I just don't care for the NFL.
  5. Asked my mom to buy me a book. The reason I want said book? Discovery Health. I watch entirely too much television.

Honorable mention: Talked on the phone with my parents and my friend, new mommy. (All is going swell in all of their lives.) Tried to start 2 new books, neither one is grabbing my attention yet. Almost completed cross-stitch project #1 for 2007. (Project #3 from 2006 is still staring at me pathetically with its incompleteness...maybe after I finish the current project.)

Well, I should get to work...as soon as I complete another one of my 50 Lists for 2007

25 Things I can do with my degree(s) other than my current job

  1. Human Resources of some sort. I deal with a lot of paperwork and stress in my current job, I might as well get paid more for my decreasing stomach lining.
  2. E-zine editor. The thought of working from home without having to interact with another human has its merits.
  3. Bookstore employee. Many people with too much education end up working in bookstores. Simply to make themselves feel superior to those customers looking for Chicken Soup books.
  4. Hotel manager. Same reason as #3, just change Chicken Soup books to Pay-per-view porn.
  5. Conflict management something or other. I like conflict apparently, otherwise why would I do what I do?
  6. FEMA employee. I'm good at getting lost.
  7. Photographer. I was an excellent portrait artist at Wal-Mart & K-Mart back in the day.
  8. Nanny. But only if I can be bossy like the ones on reality television.
  9. Career counselor. Just like the old saying goes, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, try to screw over others."
  10. Medical test subject. I could start smoking if the money is right.
  11. Attack ferret trainer. No explanation needed on this one, I do believe.
  12. Blockbuster cashier. I like being judgmental. Especially when it involves movies and other people's choices.
  13. Fashion model. Basically, I could be the 'before' pictures for all of the Slim in 6 Weeks-type infomercials.
  14. Professional walker. I'd happily give up my amateur status. I hadn't planned on entering the Olympics anyways.
  15. Newsletter editor. I like to edit things.
  16. Proofreader. See #15. I also like to read.
  17. Book critic. Most likely on-line. And only the books that interest me. No thick history books.
  18. Coffee drink developer. I believe that I could create the next au lait-esque drink for the masses. (Now I want a white mocha from Starbucks.)
  19. T-shirt designer. It's like editing. In a way. Sorta.
  20. Nielsen family member. I can watch television for hours. Getting paid to do it would be oh so sweet.
  21. Consultant. There are a number of things that I consider myself to be an expert at, just need to find other people to agree with me.
  22. Dog walker. Again, I like to walk.
  23. Emperor of South Dakota. I just like the sound of it. (This would be the only political position I'd consider holding. And only if I could have Jon Stewart as my chief consultant.)
  24. Quality control specialist for Sonic. I like me some beverages.
  25. Music shop employee. Cuz I'd like to be as witty as Nick Hornby or John Cusack. I really would.

Brrr...it's warm in here

It's a wee bit chilly here in Baton Rouge. Although it's not as cold as it is in, say Sioux Falls or Omaha, it's been an interesting transition from the 75-degree weather that we had a few days ago. But, oh well, it is winter afterall. I guess.

Other than the slightly chilly weather, the only other major topic of conversation in my office is currently American Idol. I am about to put the "No American Idol discussion" rule into effect. Again. And the show has only been on for one night. I really don't understand the entire Idol worship mentality that overtakes my department during the spring semester, but it's back. And apparently worse than ever. And I'm already tired of it. And I'm a grump.

On that note, I will begin my search for lunch. Hopefully, food will improve my disposition. Only time will tell.

It's been awhile...

since I did a random Me update. So, here we go:

  • The trip home to SD went well, overall. I was mega-sick with a cold/allergy-type thing, so I didn't get as much visiting done as I had planned.
  • Missouri is a hella-long state to drive through.
  • I prolonged my holiday vacation by a week to put myself into quarantine to try and heal from the cold/allergy-type thing.
  • I have already read 5 books this year. Including one 'classic' by Jane Austen.
  • I bought the Rocco Deluca & The Burden cd based only on the fact that Kiefer Sutherland is hot.
  • The new BR baby has been visited. The new family of three are doing super. Thanks for asking.
  • T and I lunched at Sammy's on Sunday. Which was funner than usual due to Louisiana's new no smoking in public places law. I enjoy not smelling like an ashtray after eating my crab cakes.
  • I have been rather anti-social for the past few months. Part of me is okay with this fact due to the previously mentioned 'illness', part of me blames this fact on my quickly aging body. I shall be 30 soon, and I'm not sure if I'm okay with that fact.
  • I am in the process of putting together my Groundhog Day letter for y'all. So be on the look-out for more specific Me-related facts in the snail mail soon.

25 Movies that I've claimed to have seen, but haven't
  1. Breakfast at Tiffany's
  2. Lord of the Rings (any of them)
  3. Episodes 2&3 of Star Wars
  4. The Ten Commandments

"How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone."
- Coco Chanel

It's a Girl!

So, remember back in October of 2006 when I helped host(ess) a baby shower for a co-worker/friend?

Well, the co-worker/friend and her husband became proud parents to a 6 pound, 7 ounce baby girl yesterday morning! (Baby is 19.25 inches of length, too.)

It is taking all of my energy not to run over to the bookstore and buy every little LSU girl outfit. I may have to get her some pom poms or something, though.

I am hoping to steal a few minutes away from work today to go and visit the proud family. Since classes haven't officially started, there's a few more minutes available for me to borrow.
Other than the newest addition to my circle of friends in Baton Rouge, the only other highlight of the week was the re-opening of the Starbucks in the Union (a couple of days early, I may add). I told you, it's been a rather dull week without the students around. Remind me of this fact in a week, when I am complaining about the lack of time to be sane. (Classes begin on Tuesday.) Although, I am looking forward to the long weekend ahead of me, I foresee a lot of reading, cleaning and cross-stitching in my future.

What can I say? I'm an ISTJ.

I like lists.

This should not be a surprise to any of you that have read this blog more than once.

I use lists a lot as a 'go-to' blog topic. I find comfort in the informal formality of writing a list and being able to mentally cross things off, if unable to physically cross items off, of the list. Beyond the blogoshere, I make lists of things I need to do for the day/week/month/semester/year/lifetime.

I am the pathetic soul that places items not originally included on said lists just for the pure enjoyment of crossing them off of the list. (Example: 'Showering' has been added to the list many times, at the end of the day, just to make it look like I completed a majority of the items on said list.)

I know that I am not alone with my  of lists, because many of my friends (in blog-land and in real life) utilize lists for reasons beyond organization. One friend has the list of things that she wishes to complete before turning 29. (I gave up on that list a long time ago, as I am now well past turning 29.) Another friend made a list in high school determining which age s/he would be when s/he married, had children, bought a house, etc. The only thing not included on the list were bowel movements and losses due to death or taxes. The list of friends who list things is endless. (Hee hee!) I actually believe that a majority of my friends had a master list stating that they would befriend someone who matches my attributes. That seems to be the only logical reason that many of them would put up with me.  Or something like that.

"Why is she going on about lists?" I am sure many of you, all 12 people that read this blog, have asked yourself this question at least 3-7 times since taking time out of your list-making lives to read this. (Unless, of course, reading my blog is on your list. If so, then HURRAH!, you get to cross something off of your list.) The reason that I am writing about my list-making tendencies is due to the fact that I will be providing a list of 50 topics that will be covered in list form on this blog at some time during the next 12 months. Thus, I thought it only fair to inform the public of the reasoning beyond such an endeavor. (I'm working on increasing my vocabulary, can you tell?)

So, here is the list of 50 Lists for 2007(in no particular order):
<drumroll, please>
