Today's Goal: To play with the Jumpin' Husker Ferrets. 1月30日 Bookish FunI've run across this meme a lot as of late, so I figured I'd give it a go.
Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews? I actually tend to shy away from almost any book that is heralded as a 'Must Read' or "Best.Book.Ever." Sometimes I overcome this phobia (i.e., The Kite Runner, Twilight series and Jasper Fforde books), but most of the time I will only read these types of books is either under duress or after the book as become passe. The only book that I am currently avoiding like the plague is The DaVinci Code. If you could bring three characters to life for a social event (afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be?
(Borrowing shamelessly from the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde): You are told you can't die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for awhile, eventually you realize it's past time to die. What book would you expect to get you a nice grave? Anything by James Joyce. Seriously. The one book I read by him almost caused me to give up reading for fun. Come on, we've all been there. What book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you've read, when in fact you've been nowhere near it? This is a longer list than I'd like to admit. With my mother working at bookstores most of my life, I sometimes forget that I haven't read every book there is. I guess the book that I've hinted at reading without actually opening it would be Anne of Green Gables. I've seen the mini-series. But, alas, have not read the books. As an addition to the last question, has there been a book you really thought you had read only to realize when you read a review about it/go to "reread" it that you haven't? Which book? Again, another long list. Sometimes I wonder if I actually have read any books. (I have, my list on the sidebar is accurrate, I promise.) I guess the most recent discovery I made in this arena was The Wizard of Oz. I know. What good SD native hasn't read this book? Me, apparently. You're interviewing for the post of Official Book Adviser to some VIP (who's not a big reader). What's the first book you'd recommend and why? (If you feel like you have to know the person, go ahead and personalize the VIP). I've learned that my taste in books does not always equal the taste of other people, so I'm a little hesitant in suggesting books. Although for a VIP, I'd suggest either Freakonomics or Reefer Madness. Both books make you think politically. And honestly, more people should start thinking that way. A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with? Norwegian. I need to learn more about my heritage. A mischievous fairy comes and says you must choose one book that you will reread once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick? Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life. I know the book blogging community, and all its challenges, have pushed my reading borders. What's one "bookish" thing you discovered from book blogging (maybe a new genre, or author, or new appreciation for cover art - anything)? I think I read more YA (young adult) fiction now than when I was a young adult. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, but it has been educational. And fun, too. The good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she's granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leather bound? Is it full of first edition hardcovers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favorite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead - let your imagination run free. To borrow again from the Thursday Next novels, my ideal library would contain every edition of every book ever thought of. Now, if I were a less greedy person, I'd be happy with 4 walls of bookshelves filled with non-bent corner paperbacks of all my favorite authors, along with their favorite authors' works to expand my bookishness.
Somebody needs to be more creative than meJust saying. Here are a few more categories for the KMAs:
Reality TV Show Concept Most Likely Created While at a Bar
Most Overplayed Video on MTV
Person I Least Want to See on the Cover of People/Us/Random Celeb-Magazine
Most Inappropriate Ringtone to Assign to a Family Member
1980s Toy/Cartoon That Should Be Made Into the Next Big 4th of July Weekend Movie
On that note, I should get back to work. There should be more categories tomorrow, but as always one never can tell. Current Mood: Moody

Today's Goal: To avoid Starbucks. 1月29日 And the nominees are...As it has been a dismal awards season thus far. With only a couple of 'real' awards shows being allowed to air. I have decided to create my own awards show. It is meant only to amuse myself. And maybe the 12 other people that stumble over this blog from time-to-time. Here are the categories, along with the nominees. The winners will be announced on Friday, February 1. In a ceremony very similar to the 2008 Golden Globes. But with less Mary Hart. (Even though she is from SD, she freaks me out.) Most Overused Plot or Character Device in Movies
Best Acting on a VH1 Celebreality Show
Most Annoying Person on E!
Person I Would Most Like to Hear an Acceptance Speech From
Most Uncomfortable Movie to Watch with My Parents
TV Show That I Would Sell My Soul to Have Brought Back from Cancellation
Most Overused Phrase to Describe Britney Spears
Star I Would Most Like to Spend a Day with

Appetizer
How many times per day do you usually laugh? Wow. That's a great question. I'd say the range is anywhere from 5 to 500 times a day.
Soup The last pair of sunglasses that I owned was when I was in my early double-digits of age. I have no real memory of them, other than that they were plastic and cheap. I did, however, wear my mom's old tortoise-shell/Jackie O glasses once and awhile...usually for Halloween. Salad If it had to be right now, most likely I'd say Arizona or Nevada...just because I've never been there AND the weather shouldn't be too cold. If it was during the non-winter/blizzard months, I'd love to see Washington, DC, and all of the historical areas that surround it. Main Course 2 Target Superstores. I mean, they're not on the same street (such as the majestic Maple Street in Omaha), but still there are 2 of them in town. Both set up a little differently. Both perfect in their own way. Dessert I'd love to stick with my Husker roots and say 'Scarlet' or 'Cream,' but to be honest, both of those choices for sky color are a bit Stephen King. So, I guess I'll go with lavender. I think it would be a very soothing color to be surrounded by.

Today's Goal: To exercise. 1月10日 Tornado WatchEast Baton Rouge parish is currently under a tornao watch. In January.
Wasn't it just a week ago that it was winter-like temperatures? Nothing like they have back home (SD/NE), but still it was slightly chilly outside.
But now it is warm, humid and threatening to thunder storm like a mother-mother within the next few hours?
I don't know if I buy into 'global warming,' but I'm starting to buy into blaming Gore for the climate changes that I have noticed.
Why?
FOX News told me to.
In non-weather related news regarding me, I once again fell asleep in my recliner in front of the tv last night. Proving that (1) I am turning into my parents more and more each day AND (2) I really need a new recliner as my neck is killing me today. Also, it proves that the writer's strike needs to end. I rarely fall asleep in front of the tv when it's newly scripted television.
Beyond my inability to grasp reality television, there's not much to report regarding my life. I had a very enjoyable meeting with a person from UGA today. I forget how much I enjoy having real conversations with people about things other than the weather and tv. (Boo-ya! Just mocked my inability to be intelligent...self-pity, it's what's for dinner.) I plan on spending most of the afternoon making copies. After work, the plan is to clean the apartment and either (1) read OR (2) cross-stitch while watching disc 2 of Flight of the Conchords. Yes, yes, I do rock out loud, don't I?
Well, I should get back to work.

Today's Goal: To vacuum the Jumpin' Husker Apartment. 1月8日 End of another season: College FootballBefore stepping foot on the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln, I made myself a promise that I would not get caught up in the hype of Husker football. I was even brazen enough to make this part of my introduction at orientation.
"Hello. I come to UNL via SDSU. While living in SD for almost 23 years, I have learned to enjoy cold weather, lefse and pop culture. My goals for the next two years are to expand my knowledge of all things Student Affairs by completing this graduate program AND to avoid learning anything about football. As my high school football team almost had a national record for the number of losses in a row, and my undergraduate's football team was okay, I guess."
Little did I know that one of my first assignments in grad school would be to coordinate a Football 101 class for international students. This event entailed a breakfast catered for 75 international students, who were then given a brief tutorial about the ins and outs of collegiate football (taught by former Husker greats). Following the breakfast, the students were ushered to a Husker football game, where they would be seated by football interpreters, people who would explain the game to them.
Yup. I was cast as an interpreter.
And I didn't know anything about football, other than you wanted touchdowns and wanted to hit the other player hard so that they didn't get a touchdown.
I should've known that my goal of being oblivious to all things Husker football would not last that long after noticing that the local news stations covered the two-a-days for about 20 minutes of their 22 minute broadcast. But I just learned to turn the tv off in that case. Being an interpreter for English as a second language students was a different story, as I had to at least be able to answer basic questions about why people were cheering and what a Blackshirt was.
Somehow I managed to be somewhat oblivious to football most of that season, although I somehow began to understand the game and start buying into the hype that was Eric Crouch.
Yes, my second year at Lincoln was the year that Nebraska was ranked #1 or #2 all season. Eric Crouch won the Heisman. Nebraska lost to Colorado, therefore not playing in the Big XII championship game, but somehow playing the University of Miami in the Rose Bowl for the BCS Championship...only to have our asses handed to us big time.
As you probably can tell, this is when I started caring about college football. I felt the pain of being embarassed in front of a national audience. I learned about the Heisman and Sports Illustrated cover curses. I began to wonder why anyone would agree to the BCS as a good way to determine a national champion. In all, I was hooked on college football.
After graduating from Nebraska, I moved to Baton Rouge. During my tenure here, I have watched LSU win 2 national championships via the BCS. Whereas, I'm not a LSU fan per se, I do appreicate good football. And, for the most part, LSU plays good football. But, again neither of their wins have not been without question of the BCS formula. Honestly, I hope that the NCAA figures out a better way to determine a BCS champion other than the current system, it just gives me a migraine trying to justify the current system.
So, as of about 11:00 PM last night, the 2007 college football season has ended. While ESPN is still debating the highs and lows of the season, I do have to admit that any future ulcers that I may form will be named after Bill Callahan. As my Huskers truly caused me to buy stock in Tums. Let's just hope that the combination of Pelini and Tom Osborne aids with the healing of my innards.

Today's Goal: To finish reading My Boring-Ass Life. 1月4日 DreamsI have had a lot of messed up dreams as of late.
I have no good reason to be having messed up dreams.
My stress level has been rather low.
I quite enjoyed my semester hiatus that consisted of hanging around the Jumpin' Husker Apartment watching a lot of Anthony Bourdain (new season of No Reservations starts on Monday, thankfully, as I am getting quite perturbed with the lack of decent television available at the moment), eating tortilla casserole and placing my DMC floss (a cross-stitch thing) in numerical order (I now have all of the basic colors available at the local Hobby Lobby in 5 lovely plastic totes...I know, I'm a geek). Beyond enjoying the sound of the Jumpin' Husker Ferrets frollicking, I didn't do too much. I did enjoy a lovely afternoon/evening of hanging with the Rogges on Christmas Day, along with luppering with Chuckles (Dec 27) and gorging on sushi with Moe (Dec 28), but beyond that I.was.a.lazy.ass.
I have not drank the Kool Aid.
Or any other mood altering chemical, other than allergy meds and the occasional pain killer. So, I can't blame the wake-up-in-a-cold-sweat dreaming episodes on a drug-induced frenzy. (Dang it all.)
I have avoided watching disturbing movies and/or tv shows.
Basically, because there's nothing on tv at the moment, but also due to the fact that I couldn't seem to force myself to turn away from the Travel Channel. Yup. Totally obsessed with No Reservations a thons.
My diet has been quasi-healthy.
After finishing the container of (yummy) cookies that were thrust upon me (kinda) by people, I managed to stay away from temptation (Starbucks) by staying away from civilization (hermit-like existence).
So, I am really unsure of why I have had a long run of Freddy-like dreams.
Maybe, it's because I'm officially old?
(That's been my go-to-excuse for a few days now, I kinda like it.)
