Bookish Fun

I've run across this meme a lot as of late, so I figured I'd give it a go.

Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews?

I actually tend to shy away from almost any book that is heralded as a 'Must Read' or "Best.Book.Ever." Sometimes I overcome this phobia (i.e., The Kite Runner, Twilight series and Jasper Fforde books), but most of the time I will only read these types of books is either under duress or after the book as become passe. The only book that I am currently avoiding like the plague is The DaVinci Code.

If you could bring three characters to life for a social event (afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be?

  1. Thursday Next - She seems like a fun person, plus she really likes books.
  2. Elphaba - Witches are just fun to be around. And I should know. Angel
  3. Sherlock Holmes - It would honestly be nice to see him in action, and not in a Masterpiece Theatre kinda way.

(Borrowing shamelessly from the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde): You are told you can't die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for awhile, eventually you realize it's past time to die. What book would you expect to get you a nice grave?

Anything by James Joyce. Seriously. The one book I read by him almost caused me to give up reading for fun.

Come on, we've all been there. What book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you've read, when in fact you've been nowhere near it?

This is a longer list than I'd like to admit. With my mother working at bookstores most of my life, I sometimes forget that I haven't read every book there is. I guess the book that I've hinted at reading without actually opening it would be Anne of Green Gables. I've seen the mini-series. But, alas, have not read the books.

As an addition to the last question, has there been a book you really thought you had read only to realize when you read a review about it/go to "reread" it that you haven't? Which book?

Again, another long list. Sometimes I wonder if I actually have read any books. (I have, my list on the sidebar is accurrate, I promise.) I guess the most recent discovery I made in this arena was The Wizard of Oz. I know. What good SD native hasn't read this book? Me, apparently.

You're interviewing for the post of Official Book Adviser to some VIP (who's not a big reader). What's the first book you'd recommend and why? (If you feel like you have to know the person, go ahead and personalize the VIP).

I've learned that my taste in books does not always equal the taste of other people, so I'm a little hesitant in suggesting books. Although for a VIP, I'd suggest either Freakonomics or Reefer Madness. Both books make you think politically. And honestly, more people should start thinking that way.

A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with?

Norwegian. I need to learn more about my heritage.

A mischievous fairy comes and says you must choose one book that you will reread once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick?

Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life.

I know the book blogging community, and all its challenges, have pushed my reading borders. What's one "bookish" thing you discovered from book blogging (maybe a new genre, or author, or new appreciation for cover art - anything)?

I think I read more YA (young adult) fiction now than when I was a young adult. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, but it has been educational. And fun, too.

The good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she's granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leather bound? Is it full of first edition hardcovers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favorite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead - let your imagination run free.

To borrow again from the Thursday Next novels, my ideal library would contain every edition of every book ever thought of. Now, if I were a less greedy person, I'd be happy with 4 walls of bookshelves filled with non-bent corner paperbacks of all my favorite authors, along with their favorite authors' works to expand my bookishness.

Somebody needs to be more creative than me

This week, I...

  1. Finalized travel arrangements for an up-coming work-related trip.
  2. Cried through a box of Kleenex thanks to an overly emotional response to The Friday Night Knitting Club.
  3. Googled. A lot.
  4. Cut my finger on paper. A lot.
  5. Annoyed myself and others. A lot.

Feast Time, Y'all

It's a blast from the (not-so-distant) past...

Enjoy!

Appetizer
How many times per day do you usually laugh?

Wow. That's a great question. I'd say the range is anywhere from 5 to 500 times a day. Wink

Soup
What do your sunglasses look like?

The last pair of sunglasses that I owned was when I was in my early double-digits of age. I have no real memory of them, other than that they were plastic and cheap. I did, however, wear my mom's old tortoise-shell/Jackie O glasses once and awhile...usually for Halloween.

Salad
You win a free trip to anywhere on your continent, but you have to travel by train. Where do you go?

If it had to be right now, most likely I'd say Arizona or Nevada...just because I've never been there AND the weather shouldn't be too cold. If it was during the non-winter/blizzard months, I'd love to see Washington, DC, and all of the historical areas that surround it.

Main Course
Name one thing you consider a great quality about living in your town/city.

2 Target Superstores. I mean, they're not on the same street (such as the majestic Maple Street in Omaha), but still there are 2 of them in town. Both set up a little differently. Both perfect in their own way.

Dessert
If the sky could be another color, what color do you think would look best? \

I'd love to stick with my Husker roots and say 'Scarlet' or 'Cream,' but to be honest, both of those choices for sky color are a bit Stephen King. So, I guess I'll go with lavender. I think it would be a very soothing color to be surrounded by.

5 Quick Things

  1. Why is it that I don't always get what I want?
  2. Scrabble is not my friend this week. MoSus has no mercy. Sad
  3. Reason #5,002 why the WGA Strike needs to end: I'm watching more PBS now than I did when I lived at the Jumpin' Husker Farm in SD. Where we did not have cable. And we had, at least, 3 different states worth of PBS options.
  4. At times I wish that Romy and Michelle actually did invent Post-Its. Just because it would make a great conversation starter.
  5. Me: On a Diet has slowly started. I'm doing okay, overall. Only one or two missteps. And they haven't been anything HUGE. Yet.

  1. Finished reading Book #2 for 2008. So far, I'm on target with my goal of reading at least one book per week for the year.
  2. Restocked the pantry and fridge at the Jumpin' Husker Apt. (Me:On a Diet:2008 starts Monday.)
  3. Found Waldo.
  4. Purchased only one book (Friday Night Knitting Club in paperback from Target last night.)
  5. Drank way too much coffee. Darn you Starbucks.

Wishing I was more profound

Wouldn't it be nice if I were to actually blog about something rather than just about the randomness that is my life?

I wish I had a cause to blog about. A mission. A goal even. But, alas, all I have at the moment (and most moments actually) is another list of random thoughts to share.

Kinda pathetic in a totally predictable kind of way.

  • I finished reading Dearly Devoted Dexter last night. Now, I'm sitting on pins and needles for the release of the second season of the show on DVD.
  • Hitting the pet store and Target with Moe tonight. The Jumpin' Husker Apt will soon be fully stocked. Rock!
  • Hoping that the bathtub in the Jumpin' Husker Apt gets some attention today. Here's the dish: The amount of hot water that I have had for showering has been less than optimal for a week-plus, so I let the front office know. Rocky, my super fixer upper friend, had to replace the heating element for the bathroom. Which is cool? So, this morning, I had a hot shower. Yay! But the tub didn't want to drain. Boo! So, I called and left a message for the front office this morning. So, fingers crossed, I hope to have a fully functioning bathroom again soon.
  • I will be heading to Florida in a couple of weeks for a conference. Basically, I procrastinated, and almost didn't have a hotel. Now, I do.
  • Why do I eat Cane's for lunch when I know that it will make me cranky? (Answer: the crack-filled sauce they serve)
  • I Red heart that it's almost a 3-day weekend! Yay!
  • MoSus is a geek. A geek who like celery. And kiwi. That is all.

Rainy Day Randomness

As it is a rainy day in BR, I have decided to celebrate that fact with a quick list of the 10 things I'd rather be doing on a rainy day in BR:

  1. Watching a marathon of Lifetime movies starring either Meredith Baxter Birney or Tracey Gold.
  2. Updating my MySpace page.
  3. Putting together a new bookshelf (currently on sale at Target) for the Jumpin' Husker Apt. Followed by re-organizing my books. In alphabetical order, of course.
  4. Finishing Dearly Devoted Dexter.
  5. Dusting.
  6. Buying popcorn before attending a matinee of either Sweeney Todd or Juno.
  7. Making hot chocolate.
  8. Grooming the Jumpin' Husker Ferrets.
  9. Texting my friends in SD & NE annoying messages 'complaining' about the 'horrible' winter weather we're having in Louisiana.
  10. Cross-stitching.

Books I'd Like to Read in '08

As I'm trying to be better at organizling my life, here's a go at making a list of new-to-me authors and their books that I'd like to read this year:

  1. The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon
  2. Rosie Little's Cautionary Tales for Girls by Danielle Wood
  3. The Dead Travel Fast by Eric Nuzum
  4. Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann
  5. The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr
  6. Lulu Meets God and Doubts Him by Danielle Ganek
  7. Among Other Things, I've Taken Up Smoking by Aiobheann Sweeney
  8. King Dork by Frank Portman
  9. Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs
  10. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
  11. His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman
  12. The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

Over the weekend, I...

  • Finished watching Season 1 of Flight of the Conchords on DVD. Still trying to figure out who is more do-able: Bret or Jermaine?
  • Decided that I definitely enjoyed Season 2 of Robot Chicken more than I am enjoying the lack of live awards shows. (Boo! on the Golden Globes.)
  • Helped unpack Jules' stuff in her new apartment.
  • Clipped a lot of coupons on Sunday. (Good day for coupons.)
  • Caught up with the family via Sprint's anytime minutes.
  • Caused my neck to hurt from too many hours of cross-stitching.
  • Tried to convince Moe & Jules to go out for dinner & a movie. Didn't happen last weekend, fingers are crossed for the upcoming weekend.
  • Slept. A lot.
  • Walked for over 2 miles on Saturday.

I Done Did

I know that most of you have spent many an hour pondering the following question:

"What does the Jumpin' Husker Ferret owner accomplish in a normal week?"

Well, starting today, I will begin sharing the TOP 5 accomplishments accomplished by Me each Friday.

<Dramatic pause to ensure that you have absorbed the wonderfulness of this task.>

Top 5 Accomplishments for the Week of January 5-11, 2008
  1. Completed reading My Boring-Ass Life by Kevin Smith. Does that mean that my life is even more boring? (Yes.)
  2. Have only one thing remaining on my "Really Needs to Be Done Before Classes Begin for the Spring Semester (Jan. 14)" list.
  3. Reconnected with a friend from Lincoln.
  4. Updated my MySpace page.
  5. Avoided buying a new book while at the bookstore. (Which isn't easy when there are a lot of sales going on right now.)

Tornado Watch

East Baton Rouge parish is currently under a tornao watch. In January.

Wasn't it just a week ago that it was winter-like temperatures? Nothing like they have back home (SD/NE), but still it was slightly chilly outside.

But now it is warm, humid and threatening to thunder storm like a mother-mother within the next few hours?

I don't know if I buy into 'global warming,' but I'm starting to buy into blaming Gore for the climate changes that I have noticed.

Why?

FOX News told me to.
In non-weather related news regarding me, I once again fell asleep in my recliner in front of the tv last night. Proving that (1) I am turning into my parents more and more each day AND (2) I really need a new recliner as my neck is killing me today. Also, it proves that the writer's strike needs to end. I rarely fall asleep in front of the tv when it's newly scripted television.

Beyond my inability to grasp reality television, there's not much to report regarding my life. I had a very enjoyable meeting with a person from UGA today. I forget how much I enjoy having real conversations with people about things other than the weather and tv. (Boo-ya! Just mocked my inability to be intelligent...self-pity, it's what's for dinner.) I plan on spending most of the afternoon making copies. After work, the plan is to clean the apartment and either (1) read OR (2) cross-stitch while watching disc 2 of Flight of the Conchords. Yes, yes, I do rock out loud, don't I?

Well, I should get back to work.

Procrastination Time

  1. The WGA strike needs to end. Soon. How am I supposed to procrastinate effectively if the options are either reality or repeats (FOX started re-airing season 1 of House and Bones last night)? Even the People's Choice Awards was (basically) a re-run. Argh!
  2. Newest obsession: PB Twix.
  3. Latest craving: Cold Stone Creamery. Especially a mint & chocolate.
  4. Exercise needs to become part of my vocabulary again.
  5. Is it wrong that I want to create a "Hanson" based Pandora radio station for work?

End of another season: College Football

Before stepping foot on the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln, I made myself a promise that I would not get caught up in the hype of Husker football. I was even brazen enough to make this part of my introduction at orientation.

"Hello. I come to UNL via SDSU. While living in SD for almost 23 years, I have learned to enjoy cold weather, lefse and pop culture. My goals for the next two years are to expand my knowledge of all things Student Affairs by completing this graduate program AND to avoid learning anything about football. As my high school football team almost had a national record for the number of losses in a row, and my undergraduate's football team was okay, I guess."

Little did I know that one of my first assignments in grad school would be to coordinate a Football 101 class for international students. This event entailed a breakfast catered for 75 international students, who were then given a brief tutorial about the ins and outs of collegiate football (taught by former Husker greats). Following the breakfast, the students were ushered to a Husker football game, where they would be seated by football interpreters, people who would explain the game to them.

Yup. I was cast as an interpreter.

And I didn't know anything about football, other than you wanted touchdowns and wanted to hit the other player hard so that they didn't get a touchdown.

I should've known that my goal of being oblivious to all things Husker football would not last that long after noticing that the local news stations covered the two-a-days for about 20 minutes of their 22 minute broadcast. But I just learned to turn the tv off in that case. Being an interpreter for English as a second language students was a different story, as I had to at least be able to answer basic questions about why people were cheering and what a Blackshirt was.

Somehow I managed to be somewhat oblivious to football most of that season, although I somehow began to understand the game and start buying into the hype that was Eric Crouch.

Yes, my second year at Lincoln was the year that Nebraska was ranked #1 or #2 all season. Eric Crouch won the Heisman. Nebraska lost to Colorado, therefore not playing in the Big XII championship game, but somehow playing the University of Miami in the Rose Bowl for the BCS Championship...only to have our asses handed to us big time.

As you probably can tell, this is when I started caring about college football. I felt the pain of being embarassed in front of a national audience. I learned about the Heisman and Sports Illustrated cover curses. I began to wonder why anyone would agree to the BCS as a good way to determine a national champion. In all, I was hooked on college football.

After graduating from Nebraska, I moved to Baton Rouge. During my tenure here, I have watched LSU win 2 national championships via the BCS. Whereas, I'm not a LSU fan per se, I do appreicate good football. And, for the most part, LSU plays good football. But, again neither of their wins have not been without question of the BCS formula. Honestly, I hope that the NCAA figures out a better way to determine a BCS champion other than the current system, it just gives me a migraine trying to justify the current system.

So, as of about 11:00 PM last night, the 2007 college football season has ended. While ESPN is still debating the highs and lows of the season, I do have to admit that any future ulcers that I may form will be named after Bill Callahan. As my Huskers truly caused me to buy stock in Tums. Let's just hope that the combination of Pelini and Tom Osborne aids with the healing of my innards.

Weekends are for...

  • Lounging around in the living room.
  • Avoiding all things Britney on tv.
  • Tearing out an hour-plus of cross-stitching stitches due to being off by one row. Disappointed
  • Singing along to the Spiderpig song while watching The Simpsons Movie.
  • Texting your sister while she's at work to rub in the fact that you are not.
  • Watching Superbad all the way through without being interrupted by a phone call. Finally.
  • Making lemon-pepper pork chops on the Foreman.
  • Redoing the hour-plus of cross-stitching stiches that were previously torn out. This time being very, very careful to place them on the right row.
  • Harassing MoSus on the phone.
  • Walking to Circle K to pick up the Sunday paper (lots of coupons this week) and a Vanilla Coke Zero (my new addiction).
  • Reading a book based upon a blog (Kevin Smith's My Boring-Ass Life).
  • Giggling at the Flight of the Conchords.
  • Texting your sister while you know she's at work, but gather that she may be bored enough to discuss the possiblity of starting a diet with you, albeit it be long-distance.
  • Cleaning (and re-cleaning) the Jumpin' Husker Ferret cage.
  • Washing & drying clothes.

Dreams

I have had a lot of messed up dreams as of late.

I have no good reason to be having messed up dreams.

My stress level has been rather low.
I quite enjoyed my semester hiatus that consisted of hanging around the Jumpin' Husker Apartment watching a lot of Anthony Bourdain (new season of No Reservations starts on Monday, thankfully, as I am getting quite perturbed with the lack of decent television available at the moment), eating tortilla casserole and placing my DMC floss (a cross-stitch thing) in numerical order (I now have all of the basic colors available at the local Hobby Lobby in 5 lovely plastic totes...I know, I'm a geek). Beyond enjoying the sound of the Jumpin' Husker Ferrets frollicking, I didn't do too much. I did enjoy a lovely afternoon/evening of hanging with the Rogges on Christmas Day, along with luppering with Chuckles (Dec 27) and gorging on sushi with Moe (Dec 28), but beyond that I.was.a.lazy.ass.

I have not drank the Kool Aid.
Or any other mood altering chemical, other than allergy meds and the occasional pain killer. So, I can't blame the wake-up-in-a-cold-sweat dreaming episodes on a drug-induced frenzy. (Dang it all.)

I have avoided watching disturbing movies and/or tv shows.
Basically, because there's nothing on tv at the moment, but also due to the fact that I couldn't seem to force myself to turn away from the Travel Channel. Yup. Totally obsessed with No Reservations a thons.

My diet has been quasi-healthy.
After finishing the container of (yummy) cookies that were thrust upon me (kinda) by people, I managed to stay away from temptation (Starbucks) by staying away from civilization (hermit-like existence).

So, I am really unsure of why I have had a long run of Freddy-like dreams.

Maybe, it's because I'm officially old?

(That's been my go-to-excuse for a few days now, I kinda like it.)

  2. To travel for 'fun.'
  3. To read 90 books. (With at least 10 of them being 'classics.')
  4. To limit my intake of sweets to 1-3 times a week.
