(Most likely) My last blog entry for 2006

Yup. By this time tomorrow, T and I will be on our journeys home. Yay! Although, the thought of the actual drive is daunting, I am very excited to be going home. I am also excited about the two week hiatus from work. I love my job and all, but I am so ready for the break.

I am shocked that my mother has not called to express her concern for weather, due to the fact that there's a rather decent chance of snow in the Nebraksa/South Dakota/Iowa area for the next two days. T and I will play it by ear. I'd rather get there before or during the snow than after it. Basically due to the fact that people honestly do not know how to drive in post-snow weather. Especially around the holidays. Also, I realize that a weatherman only has to be right around 50% of the time to be considered 'successful,' so here's hoping that this is one of the not-so-successful times.

In other non-travel news, I have been busy prepping my office and apartment for my departure. Cleaning out closets, e-mail storage and fridges. Attending holiday gatherings. Eating too much red velvet cake. Listening to Christmas music. Saying good-bye to folks that will be moving on during the break. Making lists of things to do or that have been done. You know, the usual fun.

I regret to inform you that I will not be sending out Christmas or New Years cards this year. Time just got away from me again. I will be trying to get out MLK Day cards, but it will most likely end up being Valentine's Day or President's Day or something lame like that. Again, I am sorry for my laziness. I blame ABC Family for having such great holiday specials that distract me.

On the health front, I managed to sleep for almost 8 hours straight last night. I did wake up two or three times due to fits of coughing, but they weren't as bad as they've been the past few days. So, maybe this means I am officially on the mend. Or that my body is just as lazy as I am. Either way, I win.

Finally, I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a lovely New Years. I look forward to seeing my SD friends and family in person soon. I hope to see some of my Nebraska folks, but that all depends on the dreaded weather, and my laziness quotient. I'm sure, as usual, laziness will prevail. Nonetheless, enjoy your holidays, and I will see you again in 2007...in cyberspace, that is.

Mondays are for...

procrastinating?

I believe that's the only thing Mondays are good for on a regular basis. So, I'm going to allow myself a few moments to procrastinate by updating y'all on how I've lived my life over the past few days:

Friday
  • Spent quality time with my GA - coffee, lunch, teambuilding. It was a good day.
  • Completed buying holiday presents for the 2006 year. (I hope.)
  • Decided to not go to my boss' holiday party in lieu of staying home and 'healing' from this cold/allergy/crap that I still have.

Saturday

  • Lunched w/T. *Grins* I  me some Cheeburger Cheeburger.
  • Gave T her holiday gifts. Which I believe were enjoyed...
  • Grabbed a few grocery type items at Target.
  • Tried to power heal using Zicam. We shall see if any good comes from this.

Sunday

  • Fell in lust with Halls Sugar-Free Kiwi-Apple cough drops. They are yummy.
  • Lazed around the house most of the day.
  • Was informed that The General is engaged to be married next July. Congrats! (Still in semi-shock myself.)
  • Coughed some more.
  • Realized that I am a rather boring person. Decided that I was okay with that fact.

MOST IMPORTANT NEWS EVER:
T and I will be departing the city of BR early (I mean obnoxiously early) on Wednesday morning. We are hoping to make it to her folks house by that night, therefore resting until driving to meet my folks on Thursday. What does this mean to you: I should be 'home, home' by Thursday afternoon. I will be 'home, home' until Friday, December 29 (we are hitting Nutty's that night, if you'd like to join the madness) and will be departing from the SD region on Saturday, December 30. If you want to hang out, please e-mail me or call or something...I don't really have many plans as of the moment. (Honestly shocked that my parents have not scheduled me for every moment of the trip. I'm happy about that fact.)

Avoiding Barnes & Noble (for the time being)

I am trying to avoid the temptation to walk across the street and buy a coffee-filled drink and a new book (or 3) from the local Barnes & Noble. Why? Because, in about a week, I will be home and will be able to abuse my Mom's B&N discount, and I don't need caffeine at 3:00 PM, especially when I'm trying to beat this darn dry cough that's stuck in my throat. Also, I have 5 or so books at my house that need to be read before I can consider buying newer ones.

With that said, here is today's list of 25, enjoy!
25 Things I would like to accomplish by 2007
  1. Eat a medium-rare petit sirloin at The Monarch Steakhouse.
  2. Participate in a Christmas light tour.
  3. Enjoy a Boulevard or two (or more).
  4. Finish Cross-Stitch Project #4. (This may be an on-going joke, I can't seem to find the motivation.)
  5. Read 5 more books.
  6. Send out 'end-of-the-year' cards.
  7. Find homes for the many, many picture frames that I own.
  8. Buy lunch for my office staff. (May happen tomorrow, we shall see.)
  9. Get rid of my cough. (Preferably before this weekend.)
  10. Finish watching Playmakers on DVD.
  11. Watch Pee-Wee's Christmas Special. (On The Cartoon Network tonight.)
  12. See two movies in a theater.
  13. Purchase a new Husker sweatshirt.
  14. Vanquish Voldemort.
  15. Write a poem or short story. Get back into real writing mode. It's been awhile.
  16. Send my aunt an e-card on her birthday.
  17. Bathe the Jumpin' Husker Ferrets.
  18. Find a new 'friend' for MoSus.
  19. Wrap holiday presents.
  20. Buy a new cd.
  21. Attend a hockey match.
  22. Exhibit patience with my inability to complete Cross-Stitch Project #4.
  23. Determine if I want to go to Spring Training.
  24. Melt at least three more packages of almond bark.
  25. Buy T lunch.

On a more pleasant note...

I am sharing a newfound favorite quote:

"Christmas gift suggestions:
To your enemy, forgiveness.
To an opponent, tolerance.
To a friend, your heart.
To a customer, service.
To all, charity.
To every child, a good example.
To yourself, respect."

Another day, another SD-related headline

In case you haven't seen the news today, South Dakota has made the national news today due to the fact that Senator Tim Johnson (D) is in the hospital due to a brain operation.

CNN, FOX News...all of the national news outlets are already making forecasts on how his removal from the Senate could effect the Democrats slight majority, especially due to the fact that SD's Governor (Mike Rounds, uber Republican) would be the person to appoint Johnson's replacement.

Although, I do agree that this is a valid question to be asking, why are we not concentrating our energy on the discussion of Johnson's health and recovery? I am, by no means, a Tim Johnson fan. I am, however, a fan of good health. And letting a man recover from a major operation before we begin discussing his removal. I'm pretty sure there are some federal laws that protect Johnson's right to maintain employment during his recovery.

I hope I'm not wrong about that fact. For all of our sake's.
I will have a happier entry later, I promise. I just needed to vent for a minute or two.

I believe I hear Starbucks calling my name.

Amtrak made me do it

So, in my other life (MySpace), my dear friends are all procrastinating with lovely question posts. I have decided that these are great blog prompts for the time being. (Creativity and I are on different playing fields at the moment.)

So today's post is brought to y'all by the wondrous Amtrak:

1. The phone rings. Who do you want it to be?
Ed McMahon. Telling me that, even though I didn't enter any type of sweepstakes, I won $1 million and no longer had any debt. That would be sweet.

2. When shopping at the grocery store, do you return your cart?
Yes. Sometimes more than just mine, depending on how lazy my fellow shoppers have been.

3. In a social setting, are you more of a talker or a listener?
As an ardent ISTJ, I'm more of a listener. Although, if I have some social lubrication (aka adult beverages), you can't shut me up.

4. Do you take compliments well?
Being a Midwesterner or Great Plains resident, not really. Although, it has been awhile since I've had one, so you can never tell.

5. Are you an active person?
In my imagination, yes. In real life, not as active as I should be.

6. If abandoned in the wilderness, would you survive?
Define 'wilderness.' No, I most likely wouldn't survive. But there'd be a great Lifetime movie about me, I'm sure.

7. Do you like to ride horses?
Horses are nothing but giant squirrels that we all must fear.

8. Did you go to camp as a kid?
Woot! Shetek Bible Camp!

Talking over people in conversations.

10. Are you judgemental?
I hope so, that's what I'm paid to do for a living.

11. Could you date someone with different religious beliefs?
The better question is "Could I date someone?" At this point, as long as they have a pulse and a bank account, they're fair game.

12. Do you like to pursue or be pursued?
See answer for #11. I'd probably say being pursued is more fun, unless it's by the cops.

13. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?
These questions are starting to make me feel very alone.

14. Are you tired?
Almost always.

15. Do you consider yourself mature or immature?

16. Do you know how to shoot a gun?
Not unless I'm playing Duck Hunt.

17. If your house was on fire, what would be the first thing you save?

18. How often do you read books?
On a daily basis. Shout out to my mom for supporting my habit!

19. Do you think about the past, present or future?
Around this time of year I do a lot. Mainly due to the overabundance of Christmas Carol-esque holiday specials.

21. Left or right?

Yes. Does it work? No.

40. Was your mom a cheerleader?
No, but if you ever have a chance to save her, you will save my world.

The little frustrations in life

25 Things that kinda frustrate me at the moment
  1. The fact that I remember writing a rather good post regarding 50 Things I Need to Accomplish in the Next 50 Days (or something like that) on November 1st-ish of this year and cannot seem to find it anywhere on my blog. (I think that it may have been eaten by my cyber-dog or something.)
  2. Inability to find the right words to reassure a scared friend.
  3. Allergies that may be a cold OR colds that should be allergies.
  4. Weather that is 29-degrees one day and then 80-degrees the next. (May also be to blame for #3 frustration.)
  5. Mary Hart. (She's always annoyed me, just today more than usual.)
  6. Cranky e-mails. (Honestly, they won't make me any more willing to work with you, usually.)
  7. Voldemort.
  8. The sound of my A/C kicking in while I'm typing this. (It's December 12, for goodness' sake.)
  9. Gossip. (I  my E! News and stuff, but I'm tired of the gossip that goes on around one's own world.)
  10. The fact that MoSus had to make her blog private due to someone who may/should be getting coal from Santa.
  11. American Dad. (For making me feel sorry for squirrels during their squirrel-tribute to What's Eating Gilbert Grape? on Sunday.)
  12. Accuholidays for playing Chicago on their Holiday Rock channel. (They're really not rock anymore, in my humble opinion.)
  13. The sheer lack of Kleenex in my life. (Need to get the basics at Target/WalMart again, darn it!)
  14. Melted Oreo balls. (Long story.)
  15. Yappy dogs. (My next door neighbor just got a puppy...it's loud.)
  16. The word "urgent."
  17. Mosquito bites. (Again, it is December 13th!)
  18. Dishonesty.
  19. Anime holiday specials.
  20. The fact that FOX renewed The War at Home but canceled Arrested Development. (Will be bitter about that for a long, long time.)
  21. Broken fingernails.
  22. The fact that my hair has a mind of its own.
  23. The letter "Q".
  24. Politics.
  25. Cockroaches.

FYI - I still sound as though Barry White mated with Kermit the Frog. And I just don't know why.

It's been awhile...

since I've done a meme. So, here we go:

Flip to page 18, paragraph 4 in the book closest to your right now, what does it say?
"Billy," she said, her voice full of stress, "I'll try but it's gonna be awful hard. We've been busy. Sissy and the baby need me here to look after them. They can't take care of themselves. You'll get along all right. You're eight years old." - Life on the Color Line by Gregory Howard Williams

If you stretch your left arm as far as possible, what are you touching?
The edge of my desk and my cell phone

What's the last program you watched on TV?
Saved by the Bell - kinda embarassed by that fact actually.

Without looking, guess what time it is.
10:35 AM-ish.

Aside from the computer, what can you hear right now?
A/C running (yup, in December!), AccuHolidays, lawn mower outside.

What are you wearing?
Khakis, green shirt, brown socks & dress shoes. I am such the fashion icon.

Did you dream last night? If you did, what about?
I probably did dream, I just cannot recall if I did or not.

When was the last time you laughed?
On the phone with Becky this morning.

Have you seen anything strange lately?
Define 'strange.' I guess seeing people wear snow boots on Friday when it was cooler (less than 32-degrees) outside.

What do you think about this meme?
Ehhh...

What's the last film you saw?
In the theater - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. On DVD - Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown.

If you became a multi-millionaire, what would you do with the money?
Faint. Pay off bills. Buy a car, house, husband...the usual. Maybe have a building dedicated to me at SDSU.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don't know.
I once took family portraits at KMart and Wal-Mart.

If you could change ONE THING in this world, without regarding politics or bad guilt, what would it be?
The 2002 Rose Bowl results (Nebraska v Miami) OR the BCS in general.

Do you like dancing?
Not even on the ceiling.

George Bush?
Cries in front of people a lot apparently.

What do you want your children's names to be, girl/boy?
I didn't know that I was expecting...but I guess I'd go with Ann and Philip.

Would you ever consider living abroad?
Only if I am infused with the knowledge on how to speak the language without taking a lesson OR if it's a predominantly English-speaking country. I do not like learning new things. (Wink)

What do you want God to tell you when you come to heaven?
Told you so.

Who should do this meme?
People avoiding piles on their desk, I guess.

Year Without a Santa Claus

NBC is airing a live-action remake of the cult classic, The Year Without a Santa Claus, tonight at 9EST/8CST.

I will have to watch to compare this Heat Miser to the original.

We shall see who is victorious tomorrow.

Brief update

Things accomplished over the weekend:
  • Finished Everything is Illuminated - very good book, takes awhile to get into, but once I finished it I was ready to read it again.
  • Vaccuumed.
  • Mopped.
  • Cleaned the bathroom.
  • Purged my book collection.
  • Watched It's a Very Muppet Christmas.

Sad, but true

My weekly horoscope, courtesy of Tiger Weekly:

Virgo
(Aug. 23 - Sept. 23)
A lot has happened in your life,
and you probably think a lot of
it is worth writing down,
perhaps in a short story
or book. Unfortunately,
you are sadly mistaken.
Nobody cares. If you're
really in a writing mood
these days, how about
writing a technical
manual about the inner
workings of Windows 3.1?
Because that's about as
interesting as you are.

With that said..

Current Mood: Slightly sad
Currently Listening to: Joy to the World by Aretha Franklin
Today's Goal: Finish reading Everything is Illuminated.

Class went well last night. Thankfully, I do not have to teach it again until February. Woot! Other than that, not much to report from my home, other than the fact that T and I will be leaving BR for Iowa/SD in little over 2 weeks. Double woot!

25 Days of Christmas

This is my most favorite time of year, when ABC Family and other cable channels showcase holiday specials every day until Christmas. Therefore, you will start to see a common theme with my lists for the next few weeks, they will be in groups of 25. Enjoy!
25 Movies/TV Specials That Make Me Think "Holiday"
  1. Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Animated version
  2. Muppet Family Christmas - Starring the Muppets from The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street, plus a cameo by Jim Henson
  3. A Christmas Story - Doesn't everyone want a Red Rider BB Gun?
  4. A Muppet Christmas Carol - What can I say, I  the Muppets!
  5. A Garfield Christmas - Garfield + Wish Machine = Happy
  6. Year Without Santa Clause - Heat miser. 'Nuff said.
  7. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer - Cheesy claymation at its finest.
  8. Elf - "Hello, my name is Buddy! What's your favorite color?"
  9. Charlie Brown Christmas - I've always wanted a tree like his.
  10. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Cult classic.
  11. Scrooged - Bill Murray at his finest.
  12. White Christmas - Classic movie with fun sing-a-long moments.
  13. Pac Man Christmas Specials - Of which, there are two. Tune into Cartoon Network between now and the 25th and you'll see them again and again....
  14. Very Smurfy Christmas - See #13.
  15. It's A Wonderful Life - Because it is.
  16. The Grinch - Although I'm not a big Jim Carrey fan, I did enjoy the live-action version lots.
  17. Christmas on Sesame Street - 1980s version when Big Bird is trying to find the true meaning of the holiday.
  18. Frosty the Snowman - Happy Birthday!
  19. Bad(der) Santa - Just to see a very dirty Gilmore girl, if for no other reason. Plus, it's hilarious.
  20. Olive, the Other Reindeer - Big named stars and cute story and lovely animation all make me jolly.
  21. Mickey's Christmas Carol - Had to include something Disney.
  22. Love Actually - Thanks to USA this is on all of the time, but I love all of the different stories involving love, actually.
  23. Arthur's Perfect Christmas- Because I love me some Marc Brown.
  24. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer - Not just a cheesy song anymore, it aired on The CW last night. Corny, but cute.
  25. Rocky Horror Picture Show - It's a family tradition. You honestly don't want to know more than that.

Playing catch-up...

First of all, I  this link. If you have considered watching Studio 60, you must go there. Now. I'll wait while you do.

Waiting.

Almost done waiting.

You take a long time to read.

Okay, time to move on.

Here are a few random lists to let you know what I've been up to this past week or so:

Veronica Mars Moments of Zen
  • Getting home from teaching class in time to see the entire episode.
  • Texting MoSus throughout the show during the OMG moments.
  • The return of the Mac. (And Wallace and Weevil.)
  • Veronica breaking down in the shower after Logan broke up with her. (Where is the LoVe?)
  • Finding out that the cheating teacher is a pothead. (4:20, anyone?)
  • Watching Dean O'Dell get drunk with Keith.
  • The music - it was fantabulous as always, but really fit with the show to a T this week.
  • Logan asking Veronica for permission to protect her one last time. (At the party, after they found a laced cup and went after the wrong girl.)
  • Unicorns = death.
  • Finding out that I was 1/2 way right about who the rapists were. (Very disappointed in the RA's involvement.)
  • Rape whistles to the rescue.
  • Realizing that it's really not safe to be a guest star from the 1980s on the show. Really not safe.

5 Reasons Allergies/Colds Suck

  1. Makes one stay home from work. (Yesterday)
  2. Used Kleenex takes up a lot of room in the garbage, thus forcing one to take out the garbage more often than normal.
  3. Daytime television. One can only watch so many hours of Spongebob Squarepants or Sportscenter.
  4. Lack of sleep due to lack of open air passages.
  5. Random sneezing attacks in the middle of telephone conversations, meals or bus rides.

Current Mood: Content (had a wonderful pumpkin pie chai latte from PJs)
Currently Listening to: Children, Go Where I Send Thee by Natalie Merchant
Today's Goal: Not sneeze as much as yesterday.
