5 Quick Things

  1. Today was the final day of my leadership training (where I've been going on Fridays during June). It was a great experience. It's just weird that it's done.
  2. I plan on being a hermit this weekend. I know...SHOCKING!
  3. Just realized that I will be home in less than a week.
  4. I need to break up with VH1...it just doesn't seem to care about me as much as it did in the past.
  5. I plan on getting a PO box next week. I will then share the new mailing information with those who wish to have it.

5 Quick Things

  1. The quirks of Quark are causing me to quake.
  2. I am starting to get excited about the upcoming trip home. I leave a week from tomorrow. Sweet.
  3. Today's simple happiness: Wearing a new shirt to work. A very soft new shirt. That orange and white and fun. And new.
  4. I have been watching VH1's latest installment in the "I Love..." franchise. And I'm thinking that I like the spoof of the "I Love the 2000s" that Mad TV did a couple years ago a lot more than I'm liking the real thing. (I'll still watch them, though. Cuz I'm lame like that.)
  5. I am craving Burger King food. And I'm not really sure why.

Today I have...

  • Finished filing...for the moment.
  • Updated the database.
  • Used change to buy my morning caffeine fix for the 6th consecutive day.
  • Purchased 2 pairs of pajamas and 3 shirts at Kohls.
  • Sent out 5 urgent e-mails.
  • Harassed my boss via e-mail...while she is away at a conference.
  • Contemplated gathering co-workers for an after work beverage or ice cream cone.
  • Found the top of my desk...and office table.
  • Began the journey to understanding QuarkXPress.
  • Played the same word on 2 different games of Scrabble.
  • Sent out e-mails to former high school classmates about events on July 7...in Sioux Falls.
  • Obsessed about the blackened fingernail that seems to not want to fall off.
  • Decided how short I will be cutting my hair in a little over a week.
  • Forwarded an Argus Leader story to my sister about the re-opening of a Minerva's at 26th & Western in Sioux Falls. (Let's do the time warp again.)
  • Been too productive.

5 Quick Things

  1. Finally watched No Country for Old Men this weekend. I enjoyed it, but I still would've preferred Juno for Best Picture.
  2. Also watched Semi-Pro this weekend. I guess I was in a Woody Harrelson mood...or something.
  3. I was actually social on Friday night (even though I had a headache from...Dells?). Went out for sushi with a bunch of co-workers to celebrate another co-worker's birthday. It was fun.
  4. I am debating on just how short I will be cutting my hair within the next two weeks.
  5. A trip to Kohl's may be in the making this week. Good sales. As usual.

The Hotel South Dakota

Title: The Hotel South Dakota
Author: Kathleen Taylor
Publication Date: 1997

From the back of the book: In 1969, I, Tory Bauer, was a high school sophomore. For me, a Life and Death issue involved finding a date for Homecoming. The only thing I had in common with the rest of my generation was the notion that love was all we'd need and an unshakable confidence in immortality.

Unfortunately, we were wrong on both counts.

It took a couple of decades, a few tragedies and betrayals, and a windy afternoon stading along the bank of the James River looking down at a dead body in the water for me to realize that the past has a long reach.

And that high school lasts forever."

My synopsis: This is the second book in the Tory Bauer Mystery series (the other books are: Sex and Salmonella, Funeral Food, Mourning Shift, Cold Front and Foreign Body). All of the books take place in the fictional town of Delphi, SD. This 'town' honestly could be any small SD town. It's full of hard-working rural folk whose lives revolve around weather, the local bar, gossip and high school sports.

The story begins with Tory receiving an invitation to join in the preparations for the upcoming homecoming/all-school reunion festivities. The festivities are being led by the popular kids from her youth. The lady in charge is the football coach's wife, an ex-cheerleader. The football coach is the ex-football star/homecoming king. Etc, etc... As the preparations for the festivities commence, all of the former high schoolers who were at the Homecoming party of 1969 start recalling the death of the school bully and the disappearance of the Homecoming King (now football coach) and Homecoming Queen (now Hollywood B-Actress). As the awkwardness of adolescence returns to the lives of the former high schoolers, they soon learn what really happened that fateful night in 1969, as well as the answers to new mysteries that occur during the present.

My favorite quotes: "We've all lived in Delphi our whole lives, and Delphi is far too small for everyone not to know everyone else. That goes double for a school system where each grade has a maximum of thirty kids, and the meager student body is sometimes bussed in from farms and from even smaller communities twenty or more miles away." - p. 22

"I don't know how the tradition of homecoming started, but it no longer has much to do with football. The actual game is incidental to the festivities these days. In fact, except for providing the uniforms and players, homecoming has little to do with the school at all. It is now more or less an excuse for the town to celebrate itself. " - p. 36

"There being little else to do in the way of fully dressed, coed recreation in eastern South Dakota, meetings are as much a social gathering as an occasion to work toward a shared goal. We take notes and make plans and delegate duties the same as they do in big cities like Fargo or Sioux Falls. And most of the time, we accomplish whatever it was we set out to do." - p. 54

"For some reason, six months of heat and humidity creates a kind of amnesia in us. We forget that hot and sweaty is always followed by cold and damp, which is followed by just plain cold." - p. 98

"I'd like to believe that there are cities with bookstores, and more than one movie theater, and restaurants whose wine cellars are not exclusively devoted to the output of Sutter Home or the brother Gallo. Places where the television is turned off and conversation is the order of the day. Where adults consort with adults, and high school activities are entertaining only to other high school students, and possibly their parents." - p. 129

"The James River, which winds its way from central North Dakota all the way to the southeastern corner of South Dakota, where it joins the Missouri River, is an unnavigatable, uninspiring trickle." - p. 143

"It is always a short-lived thrill for a Delphi native to know something that the rest of the town doesn't. Very few secrets actually stay secret around here, and possession of one is jealously guarded for as long as possible." - p. 206

"Here in the Midwest, we're acutely aware of our reputation for extending a friendly hand, lending assistance without being asked, and pitching together to ease one another's burdens." - p. 232

My thoughts: I truly enjoyed this book. Mainly due to the fact that it spoke honestly about what it is like growing up in small town SD, but also due to the fact that it made me homesick for my youth. Oh, well. I hope to relive some of the debauchery of growing up South Dakotan in two weeks.

Over the past week, I've...

  • Worked. A lot. I've been coming in early, but leaving on time. Which is a good thing.
  • Went rummage saling. Becky & I hit about 10 rummage sales on Saturday morning, not including the trip to Wal-Mart, Target & Kohls.
  • Eaten a lot of crawfish. Twas the end-of-the-year gala at my supervisor's on Saturday. Lots of good food, company and sun. (Although I didn't get burnt for a change.)
  • Watched the first two episodes of My So-Called Life. Can you believe that it's been almost 14 years since this show aired?
  • Received a big box of books from my mother. Hopefully this will encourage me to start reading at a more respectable level again. May was pathetic.
  • Checked off a lot of 'To Do' items. Still behind, but I'm slowly getting to the front of the pack again.
  • Supped with a newfound friend. Is there anything better than a good meal, good conversation and Guiness?

Well, I should get back to work. And stuff.
