Another month ends...

...and I've actually finished reading 6 books this month!

Woo hoo! I'm back in the swing of things again!

On that note, here's this week's feast:

Appetizer
Who is the easiest person for you to talk to?

Most likely the answer to that question is my sister. I can tell her anything. As I know she will judge me no matter what. Hot Also, she's the one person who has known me through all of my incarnations, and still mocks me for them all. In a loving way, of course.

Soup
If you could live in any ancient city during the height of the quality of its society and culture, which one would you choose?

Wow. This is a tough one, as I love history and I have so much fascination with ancient civilizations. But I would have to choose Rome. And not just because I have a huge crush on the actor from the tv show.

Salad
What is the most exciting event you’ve ever witnessed?

As I'm not that exciting of a person, I guess it would have to be my high school football team's first victory in about 7 years. It was the first football game of my senior-year of high school, so that made it all the better.

There have been other great moments in my life, but for some reason that night stands out as the first exciting event of my life. And as it happened almost 12 years ago to this date, it's very appropriate.

Main Course
If you were a celebrity, what would you do for a publicity stunt?

Allow Trent Reznor and Zach Braff to fight over my love and affection. On pay-per-view, of course.

Dessert
What do you consider the ideal age to have a first child?

For most people, I would say 29-ish. But it all depends on the type of relationship you're in. And one's health.

Reality bites

Why?

Because of the following list of items that makes me feel old(er) than I'd like to consider myself being.

1.    Fact: Most of the incoming first-year students (used to be called freshmen) were a mere 5 years of age when I was beginning my senior year of high school.

2.    I am no longer referred to as miss when purchasing items at a store, I am now referred to as ma'am.

3.    Most of my younger sister's friends have multiple children. Some of them by the same person. And some of them have been married for more than 5 years.

4.    I cannot stay up past 10:00 PM for the life of me.

5.    My bladder wakes me up at 5:00 AM. Every day. No matter how much or little water I had to drink the previous night.

6.    I watch more PBS than MTV.

7.    I remember a time when Nirvana was revolutionary, not retro.

8.    I remember when Transformers were on Saturday morning cartoons and commercials not on the movie screen.

9.    My godson is 10.

10.  I prefer a bowl of Cheerios over a bowl of Cap'n Crunch.

11.  I found Waldo.

12.  My youngest cousin turned 18 a few weeks ago.

13.  I will be 30 in less than a week.

Middle name game

1. You have to post these rules before you give the facts.
2. You must list one fact that is somehow relevant to your life for each letter of their middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had.

M - Mass Communication, what I obtained my B.S. in. I once dreamt that I'd be a award-winning journalist. How times have changed.
A - Aerosmith, first concert that I ever attended. On their "Get a Grip" tour. It rocked.
R - Renner, SD, my 'hometown.' Or as close to a hometown that can be claimed by a farmer's daughter.
I - Indian tacos, one of most favorite foods. Man, I miss Mad Jacks.
E - Elvis, famous person that died 3 weeks before I was born.

Technically, I'm supposed to 'tag' people to play along. But, I've always disliked the game of 'tag,' so I'll let you decide if you're a joiner.

C'mon, all of the semi-cool kids are doing it.

5 Quick Things: Work Edition

  1. Meetings don't always equal productivity.
  2. Students will sometimes prove you wrong. And when they do, they remind you why you do what you do.
  3. Meetings don't always equal stagnation.
  4. Sometimes it's unwise to mention that your salad has more dressing than a colleague's.
  5. Awards mean a lot less when everyone receives one.

Some anniversaries are bittersweet

As many of you know, today is the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting Louisiana.

While I was one of the lucky people who had electricity and water and air conditioning and food and a job and friends during the storm, I still had a moment this morning while reading the paper's coverage of the rebuilding efforts where I remembered what I was doing two years ago today.

  • I had bunkered down with the three Jumpin' Husker Ferrets at Amtrak's apartment. (He lived in the same complex as me, but company is good during a storm.
  • We spent most of the day watching The Weather Channel, enjoying adult beverages and calling our friends who were handling flooded basements and other on-campus fun at the time.
  • More than once, I had to convince Amtrak to come in from the storm. As he was truly fascinated by the flying objects.
  • The electricity went out for about 4 hours. Again, we were lucky.
  • Telephones went out for about 4 weeks.
  • When it seemed like the storm had ended, Amtrak began getting phone calls or texts from friends who did not have eletricity.
  • Slumber party at Amtrak's casa included the two of us, three ferrets, Amy and KD.
  • We fell asleep later in the day thinking that we were in the clear.
  • On the morning of August 30, KD woke us up with a phone call from one of his friends in New Orleans letting us know that the levies had failed.
  • Life began a new eerie chapter in all our lives.

Unfortunately, that chapter has not yet concluded. There is still a lot that needs to be done to rebuild this area. As there is a need to rebuild it, if not just for the culture and history it represents, then for a peace of mind for the country as a whole. Honestly, we, as a nation, spend a lot of money helping rebuild other societies after wars, floods and earthquakes, I don't think it's too much to ask for assistance in rebuilding the Gulf Coast. It doesn't need to be the 'same' as it was pre-August 29, 2005, but it would be nice for it to be cleaned up. I think that would help make a lot of people feel a lot better. And then the healing can truly begin. Finally.

Yup. I went political. It has been known to happen. Trust me, I'm sure there'll be a list of some sort added to this very page later on today. But at the moment, I just felt like remembering the not-so-distant past.

5 Quick Things

  1. Anthony Bourdain + Cleveland = brilliant television. (Honestly, if you happen upon a rerun of last night's episode of No Reservations, you just need to hunker down and watch it.)
  2. Today marks my first 'long' day of work. I teach my first, and possibly last, class of the semester tonight.
  3. Honestly, where do I want to go for lunch on my birthday?
  4. Text messaging can sometimes lead to confusion. Especially when the confused are in charge of the messaging.
  5. The girls at Starbucks begin making my 'usual' drink as soon as I enter the store. I'm officially a regular now.

5 Quick Things - Child Stars edition

  1. First, I get a random phone call from Iowa regarding visions of God on Big Brother 8. Then, I get a random phone call from Alabama informing me that the guitarist from one of my favorite bands (Rilo Kiley) once starred on Salute Your Shorts
  2. My sister then informed me that the guitarist also starred in Boy Meets World. And that the lead singer had guest starred on The Golden Girls. (Along with the following 1980s classics: The Wizard and Troop Beverly Hills.)
  3. Did you know that Fred Savage, Wonder Years' Kevin, has directed many episodes of Phil of the Future?
  4. He also directed the future classic Daddy Day Camp?
  5. My sister's friend Damon truly does look like the head geek from Freaks & Geeks? Even more so now, than then.

How I spent my weekend

My main goals for the weekend were as follows:
  • Catch up on sleep
  • So that I wouldn't get sick as I was feeling a bit peckish
  • And to cross-stitch
  • And read a lot.

I am happy to report that I honestly followed my game plan this past weekend.

How, exactly?

  • I was dead asleep by 10:00 PM every night. (Sad, so very sad.)
  • Started feeling better around noon on Sunday.
  • Worked on Cross-Stitch Project #5. All I have left to do before the dreaded back-stitching is one main color. A lot of this main color, so it may be awhile.
  • Finished reading The Carnivorous Carnival (finally) and most of Kitchen Confidential (loving it).

I also caught up with my sister and mother on the phone. Discussed members of Rilo Kiley with Amtrak. (Really, who knew?) And texted a bunch of people.

Overall, it was a delightful, if not quite boring, weekend.

Hopefully, next weekend (the last of my 20s) will bring a bit more umph. Or something.

5 Quick Things

  1. I love Barnes & Noble! I just got 3 books for less than $30. And they're all on my "Really Want To Read List:" Stardust by Neil Gaiman; Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult; Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain.
  2. Plus, I avoided buying The Eyre Affair due to this sale. I think I just need to let certain people know that I would truly appreciate a Barnes & Noble gift card from my birthday. (Which is quickly approaching.)
  3. Did I also mention that I got a free sample of Schick Intuition's Cucumber Melon scented goodness?
  4. I am truly easy to amuse.
  5. After a long day of welcoming students back to campus, I was out like a pair of 70s bell-bottoms early last night. Like 9 o'clock early.

Woot! Friday!

Say there’s a book written about your life. Who would you want to narrate the audio version?

The teenager that lives within my soul is screaming "Christian Slater!" As I was, and still am, obsessed with the man. 13 Goals for the Fall Semester

As LSU begins to prepare for a new academic year, I think it's only appropriate that today's list revolve around that fact.

As my life has revolved around that fact for a few months now. Open-mouthed

  1. To exercise more regularly.
  2. To eat better.
  3. To actually eat the lunches I bring to work instead of being 'convinced' that I really need sushi or Greek or sushi....mmmm....sushi.
  4. To get published.
  5. To search for a new job that would get me closer to home. (i.e. SD or Nebraska)
  6. To age gracefully. (Less than 2 weeks.)
  7. To renovate my lower office. It needs a makeover stat.
  8. To avoid watching the cw at all costs. (Yup. It doesn't even deserve to be capitalized in my book.)
  9. To have 2 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction with students or colleagues.
  10. To watch Pushing Daisies. It looks fun.
  11. To hang out with friends more. I've been kinda on a break for awhile now.
  12. To attend a football game. I don't care what level of ability it is, I just miss seeing it in person.
  13. To cut down on the number of lists I make.

5 Quick Things

  1. Today marks the end of summer for those of us at LSU. Tomorrow the residential communities open, and then we're back to business as usual.
  2. Random phone calls from Iowa are great! Especially when they're in reference to Big Brother. Or more importantly the fact that a contestant on Big Brother was informed by God that she would win the power of veto. How was she informed? Via a vision, of course.
  3. I am not a good receptionist.
  4. I have walked to work two days in a row. Yay! Me:On a (kinda) Diet continues.
  5. My lower office needs a make-over. Where's a random TLC person when you need one?

Reading Meme

I figured I would shock everyone with a post that doesn't include a list...for the time being.

What are you reading right now? The Carnivorous Carnival by Lemony Snicket, as part of my on-going goal to read the whole Series of Unfortunate Events series this year.

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that? Either The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore or The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. I am currently obsessed with both of these authors that I just 'discovered.' Honestly, it all depends on if I obtain a copy of the Fforde book before tomorrow or not.

What magazines do you have in your bathroom right now? Honestly, I don't keep reading material in the bathroom. And I think the only magazines in my house are the last edition of JANE (tear) and SPIN. Both purchased in the BR airport pre-flight home last month.

What’s the worst thing you were ever forced to read? One of my biggest pet peeves: Having to read something assigned to me or 'highly suggested.' In my humble opinion, Treasure Island was better as a Muppet Movie than as a book. But then again, it's been 12+ years since I was forced to read it, so maybe I'll try it again in the future. (Don't hold your breath.)

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone? It truly depends on the person and the genre...a lot of different variables. But I have been known to toot the horn of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Wicked by Gregory Maguire.

Admit it, the librarians at your library know you on a first name basis, don’t they? What's a library?

Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all? Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life by Amy Krause Rosenthal. It's a brilliant alphabetical biography, which tends to turn people off. Really, am I the only one who likes reading encyclopedias?

Do you read books while you eat? While you bathe? While you watch movies or TV? While you listen to music? While you’re on the computer? While you’re having sex? While you’re driving? The only conditions where I can truly 'read' include: Television is off. Glass of cold water is within reach. Music playing lightly from another room. I do well reading on the bus or an airplane. Yup. That's about it.

When you were little, did other children tease you about your reading habits? Nope. As my mom has worked at book stores for a long time, most were jealous of the fact that I had access to books long before the local library did.

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down? It's been awhile. I've been good at finishing books during the daylight lately. Although I would have stayed up uber late to finish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but I started that 7AM and was done by 7PM. So, the last book that I stayed up late to finish would have to be...I honestly don't know. That's kind of sad, huh?

5 Quick Things

  1. Walking to work is less painful when one does it early (I mean really early) in the morning. Basically before the sun realizes it's supposed to be hot early.
  2. Just because a bus picks one up in the morning does not always mean that a bus will be there to pick one up in the afternoon. (Thanks, Monelle.)
  3. Another sign that I need to start Me:On a Diet (again): My face looks like I've had an allergic reaction to peanuts.
  4. Starbucks coffee, specifially iced skinny white mochas, are my kryptonite.
  5. It will be really difficult avoiding my kryptonite today, as I need to go the Union and mail something. And Starbucks is only 50 steps from the post office. Darn you, Seattle!

Recent Obsession: Jasper Fforde

As I have mentioned a few times, I have found a new author that I quite like: Jasper Fforde.

While back in SD, I picked up The Big Over Easy while hanging out at my mom's place of work (Barnes & Noble). I have been intrigued by this series for awhile. Every time I wandered around the campus bookstore (typically a 3-times-a-week thing), I would pick up one of Fforde's books, read the back, think to myself "This sounds like an interesting concept" and then proceed to put the book down and buy yet another book from the vastness that is the clearance shelves. Yet. I found myself picking up a copy of The Big Over Easy and actually purchasing it while in SD. Why? Well, I had couple of flights coming up during the day. And I tend to do well with reading something new when trapped in the confines of an airplane/airport.

I am so glad that I finally gave into my cravings for this author. While I will always love Maguire's take on the classic children's stories, such as Wicked and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, I quite enjoy the way that Fforde casually places literary references throughout his writing. (Honestly, you need to read a book by Fforde to truly appreciate this statement.)

Indeed, I enjoyed his writing so much, that the only times when I was not nose deep in The Big Over Easy while flying from SD to Louisiana were when I was walking and/or using the facilities. During my 9 hour commute, I almost read the entire book. And I would've finished it completely, if not for the fact that I had to accomplish basic human functions.

Like Rowling, Fforde creates a believable world (Reading) where literary figures are as real as non-imaginary folk. Once I realized that I would have to stretch my imagination a tad, I found myself laughing at the dialogue, crying at Humpty's life & death and holding my breath as Jack Spratt and Mary Mary solved the nursery crime.

As noted in a previous blog entry, I so enjoyed The Big Over Easy that within one working day of finishing the book, I was in line at the campus bookstore purchasing the secong book in the NCD series, The Fourth Bear.

As with The Big Over Easy, I found myself not wanting to stop reading The Fourth Bear. The plot thickened with each passing chapter. Back stories and simple conversation gave the characters more depth. References to other work's of fiction were interspersed with references to non-fiction. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the story would switch gears. Once again, I found myself emotionally attached to the storyline. So much so, that during one 'death' scene, I had to put the book down and take a break. (Watched some Dirty Jobs.) But, as usual, I could not stay away from the book for long. So, as I continued reading the last few chapters with one eye open, I soon realized that I was kinda right all along regarding the crime. Yet, as usual, I had overlooked a few minor details. Which is probably why I'm not a consultant for CSI.

Upon finishing The Fourth Bear, I felt a bit conflicted. While it was a great book, there is not a third book in the series as of yet. And according to many on-line sites, there will not be another one during this calendar year. Sad

So, what's a girl to do when she finds a new author of interest?

She picks up the first book in his other series that appears to follow the same rules as those in the Nursery Crime series. Yup. I will be picking up a copy of The Eyre Affair soon. Maybe not today. But most likely by this Friday.

What can I say?

I'm hooked on Fforde.

5 Quick Things

  1. Lesson learned over the weekend: Do not make specific lunch plans with T more than an hour ahead of time. Why? Because the pre-decided upon place of lunching will NEVER be open. It has happened to us twice now. So, we shall give up trying to plan. Winging it from now on.
  2. The Market Pantry brand (Target) of vanilla wafers is rather tasty. And they only cost 99-cents a box.
  3. When forced to choose between Dirty Jobs or No Reservations marathons, I will always choose a good book. I don't want to make either of my reality tv crushes jealous.
  4. I finished reading two books over the weekend: The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde and Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. I plan on reviewing them all later today, time permitting.
  5. Brief review of The Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav: I feel dirty. Very, very dirty. Also, Carrot Top needs to lay off the roids. He was raging pretty hard core.

  1. Oreo cakesters are very, very addictive. Thanks to Jules, I now know this to be true.
  2. Another sign that I'm getting old(er): Fell asleep during a new-to-me episode of Scrubs last night.
  3. Today BigMac begins a new adventure in his life. I think this road will not be filled with as many obstacles. (I.am.so.cliche.)

FRIDAY!

Feast on this:

Describe your laundry routine. Do you have a certain day when you do it all, or do you just wash whatever you need for the next day?

I usually set aside one morning or one evening a week to do laundry. (It's helpful that I have a washer/dryer unit in my apartment, so I can monopolize it for as long as I want to pay for the electricity.) During the set-aside time, typically either a Thursday night or Saturday/Sunday morning, I sort the clothes into: whites/lights, darks, jeans/pants, towels. That's typically the order that I wash and dry them, too. I also Dryel the work pants once or twice a month.

After the clothes have been dried, they are folded and usually put away within a timely manner. Although I have been known to leave clean clothes piled up neatly on the loveseat for easy access, if it's a busy time of the year. (Like now.)

Exception to this rule: I have been klutzy and spilled on myself. I will then treat the potential stain and wash the garment and its like brethren as soon as possible.

Soup
In your opinion, what age will you be when you’ll consider yourself to truly be old?

In about 3 weeks. Wink Honestly, this answer changes by the day. But, I'm thinking it will be around 55, when I'm old enough to order off of the senior citizen menu at Perkins and Burger King.

Salad
What is one of your goals? Is it short-term, long-term, or both?

To figure out what I want to be when I grow up. It's honestly an on-going goal, so I guess it would be defined as 'both.'

Main Course
Name something unbelievable you’ve seen or read lately.

I really did enjoy reading The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde...but to describe it as unbelievable may be stretching it. I guess watching Mythbusters on Tuesday night where they proved that cigarette butts packed tightly with gun powder in a gun can cause physical harm, potentially death, when shot at a person. That was pretty wicked.

Dessert
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how happy are you today?

Honestly, I'm at 7. It's been a good week overall.
